Delta miles can be earned by; flying on Delta paid flights, earning points through a co-branded American Express credit card, or by transferring Amex Membership Reward points. (to name a few). Hopefully you didn’t miss out on the somewhat-recent opportunity to score 50,000 Delta points plus a $50 statement credit by signing up for a single credit card (with no annual fee the first year).

As I mentioned in yesterday’s blog post, it does not always make sense to redeem points. There are a few cash flights from Seattle to Shanghai round-trip for $458 round-trip on Delta, nonstop. One of the overlooked cost of using points on international flights is the customs/departure fees. For a round-trip to Asia from the US, you are looking somewhere in the $36-$93 range per passenger. This is determined by the country/city you return from.

Cash Versus Points

Let’s compare our options with this sample Seattle to Shanghai round-trip:
Cash price: $458
OR
Points: 49,000 SkyMiles + $40 in fees

At one cent per point, paying cash (or cash equivalent with MR) is effectively costing you 45,800 “miles”. Using SkyMiles would cost you 49,000 + 4,000 ($40 fees) for a total of 53,000 points. Another thing to keep in mind is that award flights do not earn you miles when you fly. Paying cash in this example would also earn you roughly 2,000 redeemable miles to use on future travel. That makes for a nearly 10,000 point net difference by paying “cash”.

Important side note, make sure to do your research on visa requirements prior to booking. China, for example, requires a visa application, read more: here.
