The Chase Southwest Plus credit card offer was only 25,000 points previously but has since been increased to 50,000 points. Chase did have a referral phone line that you could call to get the 50k Plus offer but they also killed that towards the end of March, but it’s back!
There is an annual fee of $69 which is not waived the first year. These points are worth over $750 in travel so I think the $69 is well worth it! Compared to the Premier card, the Plus card does have a foreign transaction fee and the anniversary point bonus is only 3,000 versus the Premier’s 6,000. Remember, you are able to sign up for each Southwest Credit card, there are three of them in total. Read more on multiple credit cards, here.
Why is this a big deal?
This is a big deal because signing up for two of the Southwest credit cards is the quickest way to achieve Companion Pass. You need to earn 110,000 points in a single calendar year in order to score Companion Pass for the rest of the current year as well as the following year.
Should I sign up now or later?
Chase is rumored to be applying the 5/24 rule to co-branded cards anytime now. The 5/24 rule is one that “auto-denies” your application if you have signed up for more than 5 credit cards in the last two years. If a card from any bank shows on your credit report as opened within the last two years, that would count towards the 5 limit. As of now it does not seem that this rule has taken effect on co-branded Chase cards but that could change at ANY TIME! If you are like me, you have signed up for well over 5 credit cards in the last two years. (some of us have broken that limit in just the last two months)
How do I spend $2,000 in 90 days?
The easiest way is to use www.plastiq.com and pay all your bills with a credit card. You can pay mortgages, student loans, rent, car payments and more with your credit card at a 2-3% fee. If it costs you $50 in Plastiq fees to meet your spend plus the $69 annual fee, that is only $119. That is a drop in the bucket compared to $750 in free travel and even more so if you are working towards companion pass.
Why are they laughing like this on the 50,000 offer promo image?
